Ayran is a very popular drink in Turkey, prepared with only three ingredients: yogurt, water and salt. Preparing homemade ayran is therefore very simple, fast and economical. This recipe can’t be missed when we make Lahmacun at home!
Ingredients for 1 liter of Ayran:
500 g of natural yogurt (unsweetened)
500 ml of water
1/2 teaspoon of salt (adjust amount according to preference)
Ayran is especially served alongside any kebab, lahmacun, etc. dish. It is less common to find it along with fish or seafood, since it is considered that dairy products are not a good complement to them.
How to prepare homemade Ayran:
Mix the Greek yogurt with the water, mixing until integrated. Salt to taste. Store in the refrigerator until consumed, and serve very cold.
Tips and tricks:
- Always use natural yogurt, that is, without flavorings or sugar. You can even prepare it at home very easily following this recipe of homemade yogurt.
- Ideally, use Greek yogurt, which is thicker than regular yogurt, and make sure it is made from cow’s milk, since goat or sheep yogurt are not only more expensive, but can be also quite bitter for most people.
- Finally, it is preferable to add salt little by little and then adjust it, so that it is always to our liking.
